Hi everyone, I hope you’re well today, in this lesson, we’re going to learn a variety ways of apologizing someone. Sometimes, you need to apologize someone because of a mistake you made, or the words you said.
1. Sorry.
This is the most common and simple way to show your remorse. However, this is a weak apology and you should only use it for small mistake.
For example:
- Sorry, I’m late. The traffic was really bad
- Hey guys, I forgot to tell you about the party, sorry!
2.I’m extremely/terribly sorry.
This is similar to “sorry”, but the “extremely” or “terribly” make your message stronger.
- I’m extremely sorry, I should have called you earlier.
- Hi dad, I’m terribly sorry, but I don’t think I could get home before 11 tonight.
4. I shouldn’t have…
This expression is used to show your regret. You have done something you shouldn’t have done and now you feel bad about it.
- Hey Sam, I was wrong, I shouldn’t have told people your secret.
5. It’s my fault.
This expression is quite obvious. It shows people you realize your mistake and you take the responsibility for something you did. For example:
- This morning Ms. Johnson was very angry and it’s my fault.
- What happened was a disaster and it’s all my fault. I’m sorry.
6. My bad/it’s my bad
This is a quick apology for something wrong you did, it’s normally used for minor mistakes.
- Kevin, I think you forgot to take off the shoes.
- Oops, my bad.
7. I hope you can forgive me.
This phrase is used to ask forgiveness from someone when we do something that upset them. For example:
- Mom, what I said last night was wrong, I hope you can forgive me.
9. I’d like to apologise for…
This is a more formal way of saying sorry. You usually hear it in formal/business situations or emails. For example:
- I apologise for the delay in replying to your email.
